It is the Resident’s responsibility to schedule the turn-on and turn-off appointments and pay for the utilities (unless otherwise noted in your lease). It is required that the utilities stay on during the entire lease period.
Please call the utility companies well in advance, maybe even two or three months in advance, of when you will need your utility services turned on. August is a very, very busy time for the utility companies in Urbana, and you don’t want to have a delay in having your services turned on after you have moved in.
If you have leased an apartment: you will need to arrange for electric service, water service, and if you wish telephone and cable television service.
If you have leased a house: you will need to arrange for electric service, gas service, water service, and if you wish telephone or cable television service.

Please note that the power and water companies require you to be present when they turn on your electricity, gas or water services. We are not able to be present at that appointment. One way to avoid this is to find out when the previous resident has scheduled to end their services. If you schedule your power or water to be turned on the same day, then you do not need to be present in the apartment or house. Please be sure to confirm this with the utility company when you make your appointment.
